Stargate SG-1: Truth in Fiction?

As the new season of Stargate SG-1 approaches, I began to wonder - how likely is it that the world was actually seeded from aliens from another planet?

In Stargate, human life originated on Earth and humans were slaves of an alien race known as the Gou’ld. The Gou’ld posed as Gods and used their superior technology to enslave the then primitive humans. After the humans rebelled, the Gods took some humans to other worlds in the populated the cosmos with humans (bad for the cosmos, says some Green Peace members).

Interestingly enough, back in 2001 in his novel the Atlantis Enigma, Herbie Brennan mention a similar theory – without the wormholes to different planets, of course.

Brennan penned a trilogy of books beginning with Martian Genesis that stated that life began on Mars citing archaeological anomalies that support his beliefs, including the infamous “Face on Mars”. In his second novel, the Atlantis Enigma, he took Plato's description of the lost civilization of Atlantis as a starting point and used orthodox anthropological theories and the latest theory regarding the construction of the Pyramids and Sphinx, combining world mythologies, tectonic disruption, and evidence of Meteor strikes to support his theory of ancient astronauts coming to Earth and “seeding the planet”, only to see their work destroyed. Brennan believed that the Ice Age was preceded by a technologically sophisticated global civilization that was obliterated by a fragment from a supernova. The other planets of the solar system, including a tenth planet between Jupiter and Mars, were destroyed in the process, creating the asteroid belt. Finally, in his third book, the Secret History of Ancient Egypt, Brennan continues his own theory of evolution with support from the unusual Egyptian history.

Could it be possible that Brennan’s version of life on Earth is true? Perhaps. In the very least, Mr. Brennan brings forth a lot of intriguing questions. He supports his theory without the new age psychobabble and b.s., trying to be a scientific as possible (to my knowledge, the author is NOT a true archeologist or scientist). Brennan very carefully builds his hypothesis for not only Atlantis, but what brought about its end.

While the plausibility of his final solution - a fragment of a supernova affected all the planets of the Milky Way to one extent or another, in the process, bringing about ruin to the lost continent – is definitely in question, however, he carefully and entertainingly build his case to support the claim. He uncovers evidence of massive ditch-building and other large scale building works done in the Americas on the scale reputed by Atlantis. He also cites geological evidence that the massive Atlantic Ridge was above sea level in the not too distant past. He provides a detailed breakdown on the theory of the Ice Age (which some scholars still do not believe actually took place), then obliterates their theories with the implausibility of it all, while skillfully placing little nuggets that support his overall theory. His argument his strong, persuasive and the book itself is a page turner. Unfortunately, I’ve heard that it is now out-of-print. The good news is you can still get a pre-viewed copy at Amazon and also EBay’s Half.com. Those interested in Atlantis and Ancient History should definitely try to find a copy of this very entertaining read!

ATLANTIS FINALLY FOUND? ONE AUTHOR THINKS SO!

Professor Arysio Nunes dos Santos makes some bold statements in his book, Atlantis, The Lost Continent Finally Found. Using scientific and other methods to support his arguments, Santos argues that catastrophic events at the end of the Ice Age coincided with the Universal Flood and the fall of Atlantis. He uses this data to specify a location he believes fits all of Plato's and other authors descriptions of the sunken land.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you'll know that Atlantis is an island continent whose existence and location have never been confirmed. The first references to Atlantis were from the classical Greek philosopher Plato, who said it was engulfed by the ocean as the result of an earthquake 9,000 years before his own time. Most scholars now regard Plato's description of Atlantis as fiction, though it is often thought that Plato drew upon memories of past events such as the Thera eruption or the Trojan War. Other scholars argue that Plato's account was inspired by events of his own day.

Whether his views and his beliefs in the location are accurate, I don't know but his book is an interesting read. I suggest anyone interested in Atlantis take a look at it. Visit his website at [1]

Atlantis has tantalised for a millenia. In my novel Ancient Rising, my archeologist character, Doctor Theoden Constantopolus goes in to detail explaining the origins of the Atlantis myths.

Chile's Stone balls - Some suggested they were created by the indigenous Indians. Some scientists dared to say it was evidence of Atlantis.

Unfortunately at the time there was no way to date the stones because of contamination. Some of the stones had been moved – some politicians had them put in their front lawns as an ornament. Some of the stones were buried in the dirt. When tests were run on the surround vegetation underneath the stones – the date was disappointing. Two thousand years old. If Atlantis did exist – it would at least have been twelve thousand years old.

The Cuban Atlantis - Underwater pyramids sighted off the coast of Cuba. An assortment of scientists had already combed through the formations. There was an excited buzz in the community that this was a significant find. Unfortunately, it seems to be nothing more then an unusual rock formation on the sea floor. No ruins. No statues. No pyramids.

The Indian Atlantis – They did discover an underwater city off the coast of India. It was an unbelievable discovery. When they dated the artifacts and the statues – it was apparent the site was formerly part of India and had been sent into the sea by a massive earthquake. It was no more then four thousand years old. A significant find – to say the least – but hardly Atlantis.

Akrotiri - That was the one that stung the most. When it was discovered – the m.o. seemed to fit perfectly. The Thera eruption may have been the most destructive event in human history – depending of course on what we find out about Atlantis – and its destruction would have been sudden and immediate – just as Plato described. In one night of mis-adventure. With Akrotiri – there was proof of an advanced sea-going society that flourished before the eruption. The society could perhaps see even the destruction comin’. No body has ever been found at Akrotiri. However, once again – when the data came back – the results were again disappointing. Instead of being nine thousand years before the time of Plato – it was dated at nine hundred. Those who believe that Akrotiri was Atlantis believed the translations of Plato’s works were inaccurate. The years associated with Atlantis were inaccurately multiplied by factors of ten.

There were other probles too, Thera was much too small to be Atlantis. Plato said the size of tha continent was larger then Asia. Also – it wasn’t outside the straits of Gibraltar – Plato’s Pillars of Hercules.

Other myths- Throughout the world there are references to an advanced civilization in the west. Many scholars assumed they were related to the Mayans, tha Incas, and the other ancient South American tribes. The races of South America and the Minoan culture are direct descendants of the Atlanteans. In fact, some Mayan artifacts refer to Atzland as their origin.

Histories Historical Detective - Archaeology is like being a historic detective. Like a Sherlock Holmes of antiquity. As an investigator – you look for corroborating witnesses. It was amazing how much corroborating of Plato’s story was never known to contemporary America. There are Hindu traditions that speak of partially sunken islands called Attala, Shveta-Dvipa, and Patala. They were beautiful islands that were the remains of a vast continent. Attala was one of tha Hindu’s seven paradises or Iokas. Supposedly, this continent sunk after the skies fell and death reigned from Meru which they also called Atalas – the holy mountain.

The Mayans’ myths of origin speak of Atzlan, a lost continent or island, as the place from which they originated. They were driven from Atzlan when a huge volcanic cataclysm destroyed the land and sunk it into the sea.

Not only that, Plato wasn’t the only writer to state Atlantis existed. Writers such as Hecateus, Herodotus, Skylax, and Aristotle used the term Atlantic Ocean and spoke of lands that were swallowed by the sea. This confirms that Atlantis was known before Plato wrote his famous epics. Even Homer and Hesiod wrote of tha great ocean as described by Plato that circled the lands of the ancient world. Diodorus Siculus, contemporary of Caesar, wrote of tha Amazons of Africa and their stories of conquering the Atlantean state. Ancient Maps from that time period and beyond showed a group of islands called the ‘Atlantic Islands’. There were typically seven islands and were often equated with the Seven Blest Islands of Greek Mythos. We haven’t even gotten ta the Greek myths – the Atlantides – who were the seven beautiful daughters of tha Titan Atlas. Atlas, son of Ipateus, was named King of Atlantis by Poseidon himself after tha great war between tha Olympians and tha Titans. When Zeus assumed power, the twelve sons of Cronus divided the world between them. Poseidon was given Atlantis – and the seas surrounding it. Poseidon made the island to his liking, creating the Gulf Stream to mix warm and cold waters together and making the land extremely fertile.

Of course, according to Plato – things did not end well.

You could go on for years studying this stuff. Believing this or trying to disprove it. Until Atlantis is found – there is really no way to establish the truth of the myths as fact or fiction.

Of course, most scholars never believed Homer’s Troy existed until Henrich Schliemann discovered it in 1873. One thing was certain, my boy – there was an amazingly advanced culture that dated back to at least to 4,000 BC. Whether it was tha Atlanteans or the Minoans was hard ta say. Perhaps the Minoans were like the Mayans – descendents of tha Atlanteans – meaning Atlantis would have to be much, much older.

Hopefully one day we will find out.
